I'm considering adding a red dot to my Shield 9mm, but since I mostly carry it OWB, I'm curious if the dot interferes with standard OWB holsters. Any insights?

Never used a rdo on a shield, always found them to small for my hand. But that aside, if your owb is kydex cutting the out for the optic can be a possibility , not so much with leather. I've done it but it's not pretty. I have an old fie, pre heritage sa 22. Mounted a original tc mount and scope, cut the leather around the base with the scope exposed. works for what I use it for but adds no protection to the optic. Most cut outs do the same.

You should be just fine using a dot sight on a Shield OWB holster in most situations. Most of the “standard” OWB holsters available today already have enough space at the top, even if they aren’t specifically labeled as optic-ready. The only time I’ve encountered issues is with older leather holsters that fit really snug around the slide. Those can sometimes squeeze the optic a bit.
