First AR Build — Need Your Thoughts

Been thinking about building my first AR-15 for a while now and finally starting to dive into parts. There are some good deals out there, but honestly, I still feel like I'm figuring it all out.

I'm planning on going for a basic rifle build, probably sticking with 5.56 for my first go. I've heard mixed things about going different calibers for a first-time build. Anyone have thoughts on that?

I'd love to know if there are any parts or brands I should steer clear of. Seems like some things are hyped up but don't really deliver, you know?

Also, what about hidden costs or mistakes that might pop up along the way? I'm worried about spending more than I need to or winding up with parts that don't fit well together. Should I just take the plunge and buy a pre-built one?

Any tips or stories from when you were starting out would really help me. Thanks!

Been waiting to see if anyone else jumped in . Built many from basic to all the whistles and bells. Good set of tools go along ways. They will make it easier and show a better end result . Breaking a wing putting the trigger guard pin in and your lower is junk. Scratch the side putting in the retaing pin in the bolt release and every time you pick it up you will see it and curse. MidwayUSA has a great series on assembly, Larry does agreat job in plain English. As for parts you get what you pay for. Was building an A2 replica and had a limited availability of non f marked front sight assembly / gas block, pre drilled locking pins are a mistake . I Don't buy into the 556/223 pressure issues , I can hear the desenters already , and I feel the jury is still out on the wilde chambers. But decisions have to be made. Could go on for hours. I normally spend close to an hour or more when building a MSR platform for a customer on when, where and how they want the end product to turn out. Good luck. Any specific questions, I will do my best to answer. Once you build one it won't be your last.
