I used to think higher lumen output was all that mattered but that is not the full picture. The beam shape, throw, hotspot, battery type and switch placement all play a role too. So a more focused beam with lower lumen output can be more effective than a brighter light that spreads out too much. Understanding how the light works matters more than just looking at the numbers.

Beam pattern, that’s everything. I switched from a light that just threw a wide flood to one with a more focused beam and I could identify targets at a distance without blinding myself with backsplash. Lumens might sell flashlights but it’s the quality of the beam that really matters when it counts. Oh and those momentary-only switches completely changed the way I use a light.

I used to always chase after the highest lumens, but then I realized my big, high-flood light was mostly just illuminating my own face more than it was the actual target. I've found that a tight throw beats raw brightness every single time.
