I thought I had a collector's piece and it turned out they made 300,000 of them and half are still in circulation. The internet is great for bursting bubbles. What grandpa said was rare in 1975 might be common as dirt now. Do your research before you brag, or you'll look silly. Speaking from experience here...

There is alot to unpack in your post Alan. 50 years of history and 3 generations says alot . But even if there were 300k made it still can be unique beyond the family history. The internet can be your friend or foe. Different calibers, barrel lengths, types of wood, even barrel bands and sling mounts make them unique. Hang in there.

Even if it’s common on paper, the little variations and family story still make it one of a kind in hands

I had a similar moment once and it was humbling. Something you assume is rare suddenly turns out to be everywhere once you dig into production numbers.

The other point here is that something might be quite rare, but not valuable at all.
Case in point, my grandfather gave me his model 36 Winchester, 9mm rimfire shotgun. Commonly called a "garden gun" and were popular in the 20's. There were a number of off brand and imported guns of low quality but this one is a Winchester. They only made about 20,000 of them. They were not serial numbered and not many still exist to this day but they still don't bring much at auction.

The other issue is that our ability to research something has greatly increased since 1975. Much of what people "knew" back then was from what they heard from "experts".
People would need more books than in a public library to have the information they can access with their smart phone- and yet people are so much more stupid, with no common sense!

Well rare can be a state of mind. Below is a Winchester 1910 401WSL. A little less than 21k made. This one was made 1929 bought by my great uncle's father, I'm the 4th generation caretaker. The deer under the rifle was shot by it in 1949 by the said original owner. Heritage matters.

That is one I would like to have but finding one in decent shape at a good price is challenging, because of its rarity.
