DIY shooting range

I just moved to the Lewiston area for work, and I've been thinking about building a personal shooting range on my property. I really need to get a handle on any local and state regulations.

I believe there's a state law that requires a minimum setback of 100yds from permanent structures, but I'm particularly curious about how close I can build to the stream on my property. Also, the area where I want to put my earthen backstop is undeveloped right now, so I'm wondering if that affects any rules about setting up the range. Any advice?

There is alot to unpack in your post. For RIFLE RANGES, there are standards set by the state . As such we have a family recreation area that we like to shoot at. being in town you may have more regulations than out in the country . Minimum of 100 yards from any structures not owned by you. Back stops rules are always higher is better. Know your target and what's beyond it, always applies. I have 10 acres of wood behind my 15 ft backstop. Noise can be an issue closer to town. You may meet all the safety and legal requirements , but the neighbors can complain about the noise and get you shut down. I could go on and on, but I will leave you with that for now.

Since your backstop is close to a stream, it’s a good idea to reach out to the Maine DEP. They’ve got some rules in place about lead contamination and runoff, especially when you're dealing with water sources. It might seem like just a patch of land, but even undeveloped areas can spark an environmental review if it messes with wetlands or those precious protected habitats.

If you’re into investing in berms and backstops, it could totally be worth your while to have someone who really knows Maine’s regulations design it for you. Trust me, it can save you a ton of headaches down the road.
