My permit finally came in the mail, and I’ll be hunting with black powder for the first time ever this year. Looking for any advice on guns. I’ve been looking at a starter kit from cabelas. I haven’t hunted in over a decade, and I always used a 30.06. I know the range is different but are there any other differences with muzzleloaders that I’d need to know? I’m thinking about deer currently but I’ll hunt anything I can with it. Just excited to get back out there. Thanks!

Welcome to the forum. Black powder takes on a lot of forms. From the traditional flintlock to cap and ball to the modern in lines. Kinda like how far down the rabbit hole do you want to go. I compete with my flintlock, but primary hunt with my inline. Have no reason why I don't use my flintlock but had the in line before and just stuck with it. Any path down that hole has questions and answers that can range from the same to almost complete opposite. Happy to answer any and all.

Most starter kits typically use 209 primers and they're pretty reliable and easy to track down for me. Though some states have their own rules about different ignition types. Before you dive in, double-check that your setup is all good with your local regs.
