I've been considering getting a shotgun for home defense. Right now, I'm debating between 12-gauge and 20-gauge. I know the 12ga packs a heavier punch, but I've heard the 20ga is easier to handle and has less recoil, which could be important in a tight space.

What should I look for in barrel length and stock setup? Any specific features I should prioritize for home defense? Also, what models or brands have you had good luck with? I want something reliable and straightforward.

And on training—I've shot shotguns a bit, but not enough to feel confident. What kind of practice do you think I should focus on to be prepared if it ever comes down to it?

I would debate the recoil comment as between 12 and 20, the weight of the gun enters into it, and I have fired 20's which were very 'snappy'. I would say probably a pump gun with a relatively shorter barrel. Simple, costs less, low maintenance, safer for having around the house. But if there are kids in the house, double barrel, kept unloaded and locked up may be a better way to go. Shooting five stand with a pump gives you good practice on a fast reload. Gas operated semis can be fussy maintenance wise.
